1881: Don Bosco is a Saint!

A few young salesians were presented to the Holy Father. Hearing the word salesian’ Leo XIII stood up and said. “Salesians!…and how is Don Bosco?” “He is well, Your Holiness, and he sends you his greetings and asks for a blessing.” “I bless him willingly. Where is he now’?” “I believe,” said Father Calvi, “he is about to undertake a journey to France to raise funds.” “Oh, yes, Don Bosco is a saint!” Cardinal Bilio, who too, had a soft corner for the salesians, remarked, “Did you hear that? Don Bosco is a saint, the Pope said it and the Pope is infallible. Hence Don Bosco is a saint. No one is canonized while alive, but Don Bosco is made a saint already now…tell him that.” The Pope smiled and added: “Yes, it is true, Don Bosco is a saint!” (MB XV, 759)
