Feast of Blessed Orione

He was a beloved pupil of Don Bosco. When the saint was seriously sick in January 1888, Orione was one of the boys who offered their life for Don Bosco. However, he did not become a Salesian, but became a diocesan priest and the Founder of a Congregation (Orionists). He died in 1940. and was beatified in 1980. (cfr. BM XVIII, 539)

1875: Some will surpass Dominic Savio

During a private audience Pope Pius IX asked Don Bosco whether there were still boys at the Oratory trying to emulate Dominic Savio. The saint replied that some might even surpass him! (cfr.CDB,104)

1884: A prophecy fulfilled

Don Bosco visited the orphanage for girls at Cannes (France) which was conducted by the sisters of St. Thomas of Villanova. They asked the saint whether they would ever return to the hospital from which they were expelled. Don Bosco said that they would return, but much later, when all but one of the sisters would be dead. In fact in 1930 when one of those sisters was alive, the hospital was entrusted to the Sisters (cfr. MB XVII, 45)

1886: Journey to France and Spain

Although he was 70 years old, Don Bosco undertook another journey to France and Spain to visit the salesian houses and togather funds. Father Cerruti, Father Sala and cleric Viglietti, his secretary, accompanied him. (cfr. MB XVIII, 40)

1893: Second salesian

bishop The episcopal ordination of Mgr. Lasagna took place in the Church of the Sacred Heart Rome, by Card. Parocchi, assisted by Mgr. Grassi and Mgr. Cagliero. He was the second salesian Bishop as was foretold by Don Bosco (Dec. 7,1886). Don Rua wanted to be the first to kiss the ring of the new bishop as Don Bosco did in the case of Cagliero (DR I, 605)

1940: Death of Blessed Luigi Orione

He studied at the Oratory under Don Bosco. His index finger was miraculously cured on February 1, 1888 on touching the body of the saint. He founded the Congregation of Divine Providence which has many things in common with the Salesian Society and the Cottolengo Institute. Orione was present at Rome on April 1, 1934 for Don Bosun’s canonization, and at Turin on the 8th for the procession with the saint’s mortal remains. The process for his beatification was started in 1947. He was beatified in 1980. (cfr. CDB, 105)
