1799: Death of Pius VI
Pope Pius VI was taken prisoner to Valence, where he died on August 29 at the age of 82. “He is the last Pope,” triumphantly shouted the sectaries. “Rome is ours!” (BM I, 2) However, his successor was elected on 14 March 1800 at Venice and he took the name of Pius VII.
